Ever since a prominent medical textbook recommended bed rest to cure a variety of ills in the 1860s, patients have spent countless hours flat on their backs. However, one analysis of clinical trials on bed rest published since the 1960s shows that it does not provide help for any of the fifteen conditions studied. In fact, nine of the conditions, which included low back pain, actually got worse with bed rest. With this in mind, the modern-day recommendation for combating back pain includes resuming regular activities as soon as possible. Chiropractic has long maintained that relief from low back pain is usually best achieved by returning the spine to its proper functioning position.
