Neck Pain

Neck pain can seriously hinder your life if not treated promptly. Dr. Meghan Custer, the chiropractor at Ivy Commons Family Chiropractic in Charlottesville, VA is here to help. To get treated for neck pain, we must first find why and where your neck is hurting to treat you correctly. Aches and pains are a common part of life. It is when they become chronic and severe that you should seek treatment.

Symptoms of Neck Pain

There are various symptoms our patients experience alongside neck pain including headaches, muscle spasms, a restricted range of motion, and pain that increases when you cannot move your head for a while. If you have one or several of these symptoms, our chiropractor can help you by reducing your pain and reduce the likelihood of it returning in the future.

Causes of Neck Pain

There are many potential causes of neck pain including disease, muscle strain, nerve compression, injuries, and joints that have been worn down over time. Diseases such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis can also contribute to neck pain. Muscles can be strained from sitting incorrectly at a desk too long. Bone spurs and herniated disks can put pressure on nerves in the neck. Whiplash from an auto accident can cause neck pain. Joints can also wear down due to age in the form of osteoarthritis.

How a Chiropractor Can Help

Once you make an appointment and are examined at your first appointment, a treatment plan will be discussed. Neck pain treatment will likely include a combination of massage therapy, chiropractic adjustments, and corrective exercises to decrease the pain you are experiencing. The head and spine can be realigned with chiropractic adjustments, taking pressure off of muscles and other soft tissue in the neck area.

Gently massaging the neck and upper back areas can also soothe sore muscles and relax tight muscles. We can also suggest corrective exercises you can perform at home between treatments to help speed up the healing process. Please contact us if you have any questions about neck pain treatment or other treatment options we have.
