According to one online survey of more than 200 chiropractors across North America, 89 percent of the respondents indicated that they have seen patients between ages 5 and 18 years who reported back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by heavy backpacks. As pervasive as this problem seems to be, parents should take precautions that ensure that their children will not become similarly burdened. The first step in this direction involves choosing a backpack for school that is the correct size. With this in mind, a child should not be able to fill a backpack with a load that exceeds 15 percent of his or her body weight. Beyond that, a child should use both shoulder straps when carrying a pack.

P.S. Backpacks equipped with waist straps transfer much of the weight from the shoulders to the waist, where it is more easily borne.

Shoulders, hip problems, knees, ankles and even the jaw problems have been shown to respond to chiropractic care. Find out before resorting to drugs or irreversible surgery!
